When is the registration deadline for SparkHS?

SparkHS registration ends 10 days before the competition in mid-February. Check back later for more information and make sure to register to secure your spot in the competition!

I missed the registration deadline. Can I still participate?

Unfortunately, registrations after the deadline are not usually accepted for organizational reasons. However, you might want to get in touch with our organizers to see if there are any exceptions.

Who is eligible to participate in the SparkHS competition?

SparkHS competition is open to all students between grades 9-12 with current high school enrollment. For more information, please read our Event Terms of Service.

Can I register individually or do I need to be part of a team?

Both individual and team registrations are accepted. If you are registering as a team, all members should meet the eligibility criteria. Please keep in mind that registrations are once per team.

How many members can be in a team?

Teams can have up to 4 members. Make sure to list all team members during registration. Please contact our organizers regarding a change in teams.

Is there a registration fee to participate in SparkHS?

No, registration for SparkHS is completely free.

I registered but a teamate or I can't participate.

Participants can opt out at any time up to a week before the event. Please contact our organizers for further assistance.

When is SparkHS scheduled for?

SparkHS is scheduled for mid-February 2024, starting with the virtual kickoff the Friday before the competition, and ending on the following Sunday with our Closing Ceremony. Register now and mark your calendars!

Where will SparkHS be held?

SparkHS will take place both virtually and in-person in Minnesota, with the location still TBD.

What prizes can participants expect?

Winners can expect exciting prizes, such as cash prizes, scholarships, company merchandise, and more. Detailed prize information will be revealed closer to the event date.

What's the event schedule for SparkHS 2024?

The event will last three days, starting 4:00 PM CST the Friday before the competition, and continue for 48 hours after the kickoff. The full schedule will be released on our website two weeks before the event.

Are there any specific guidelines or rules I should be aware of?

Absolutely. All participants must adhere to our Code of Conduct and Terms of Service, and projects should focus on the given theme. Detailed instructions will be provided at the start of the event and can soon be found on our website.

How is the event structured?

The SparkHS competition is spread across two days with team brainstorming, workshops, speakers, presentations, and the final judging. Preceding the competition is our event kickoff, where the SparkHS 2024 Framing Problem is introduced, and ending is our Closing Ceremony, announcing winners and awarding prizes. After project submission, several mini-events will be hosted to give participants more chances to win prizes.

What skill level is expected for participants?

SparkHS is open to all skill levels! Whether you're a beginner or an expert, there are several opportunities for you and your team to succeed and win awards during the competition.

What are the mini-events?

Mini-events are optional quick, fun challenges spread throughout the competition to keep the energy high and give participants a breather after their main project.

How are projects judged?

Each project is judged by multiple veteran volunteers with expertise in their industry to ensure an equal competition. Projects are judged off a variety of criteria, giving every team a chance to win prizes in specific categories.

Our website showcases previous example projects on the "About" section of our homepage, however, expect more projects to be shown soon.

How our projects scored?

Projects are scored by our judges based on the event rubric. The rubric covers various aspects like innovation, design, feasibility, presentation, and more. It's available for download on our website.

How are projects submitted?

Project submissions will be accepted through our online, in-house, submission portal. Detailed submission guidelines & instructions can soon be found in the event handbook and our website.

Will there be any workshops during the event?

Absolutely! We host several optional workshops during the event to help participants fine-tune their skills. Additionally, there will be a variety of guest speakers, mentors, and judges for help and inspiration. Check our schedule in the event handbook for more details.
